FAQs

Got a question? We’re here to help.

  • How do I choose between sod & hydroseeding?

When choosing between sod and hydroseeding for your lawn, consider your timeline, budget, and soil conditions. Sod provides instant results with mature grass that's ready for use within weeks, but costs significantly more upfront. It works well on slopes and areas needing immediate erosion control. Hydroseeding costs about half as much and allows for custom seed blends suited to your specific conditions, but requires 2-3 months to establish and needs consistent watering. Choose sod if you need quick results and have the budget, or hydroseeding if you want cost savings and can wait for establishment while maintaining proper care.

  • What's the difference between rough grading and finish grading?

Rough grading and finish grading are two distinct phases in excavation and site preparation. Rough grading involves the initial movement and shaping of large quantities of earth to establish approximate elevations and contours. This phase focuses on bulk earthwork, creating basic slopes, and achieving general grade requirements within broader tolerances, typically using heavy equipment like bulldozers and scrapers.

Finish grading follows rough grading and involves precise fine-tuning of surfaces to exact specifications. This final phase requires careful attention to detailed elevations, slopes, and drainage patterns, often using smaller equipment and hand tools. Finish grading ensures surfaces meet strict tolerances for construction, paving, or landscaping, creating the final substrate for subsequent work phases.

  • Is all soil ready for seeding or sod?

Not all dirt is black or ready for planting grass. Soil color varies widely - from red clay to sandy brown to gray - depending on organic matter, minerals, and composition. Black soil typically indicates high organic content, which is good for plants, but color alone doesn't determine planting readiness.

For grass, you need well-draining soil with proper pH (6.0-7.0), adequate nutrients, and good structure. Even black soil might be too compacted, poorly drained, or have incorrect pH levels. During grading process and before planting we determine the consistancy of your soil and recommend how it can be amended to get the best base for your seed or sod.
